Session Descriptions below!

Session 1 (10:00am-10:45am): The Impact of Emotional Labor in our Workspaces

Presented by: Steve Grimes, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund

Session Description: A loose definition of emotional labor is the effort needed to change, suppress, or create feelings and expressions on the job. While our work is generally relegated to the “backroom” of Development, we are many times asked (either formally or informally) to engage with our emotions to complete a given workstream. What are the effects of these requirements on our ability to be successful in our positions and how might we leverage this part of our work for a better sense of well-being at work and in life overall? This presentation hopes to answer these questions and spur further thinking on the impact of managing emotions in our workplaces.

Session 2 (11:00am-11:45am): The ABCs and 123s of DAFs

Presented by: Melissa Bank StepnoHelen Brown Group

Session Description: Donor Advised Funds (DAFs) are transforming the landscape of nonprofit fundraising, influencing donor behavior, shaping studies like Giving USA, drawing attention on Capitol Hill, and changing the way that we approach prospect research. But what are they? Why are they growing so quickly? What should we be thinking about when we are researching a prospect with a DAF? We will explore all of these questions in this session.

Session 3 (1:00pm-1:45pm): Digital Gift Officers: Pipeline Pluses

Presented by: Rich Horne and Mary Callaghan, Vassar College

Session Description: Digital Gift Officer (DXO) programs incorporate the newest and most innovative strategies that contour with traditional arrangements of individual giving teamwork within higher education. They plug gaps between annual fund officer activity and major gift officer activity. DXOs at Vassar College manage upwards of 1,000 prospects each and apply a higher-touch approach to their prospects than is possible for annual fund officers. Vassar College will explain its DXO program history, share strategies that have proven successful, discuss portfolio building experiences based on a descriptive scoring model (in-house), and highlight where the school is heading in a competitive field of college and university advancement/development investments for campaign and outside-of-campaign fundraising.

Session 4 (2:00pm-2:45pm): Keep it Moving, People

Presented by: Bethany Morley, West Chester University

Session Description: The West Chester University Foundation has spent the past three years working closely with major gift officers, senior management, and advancement services to optimize portfolio movement for those newly assigned, as well as those currently “stuck” in portfolios, as part of the annual portfolio review process. Through trial and error, collaboration, and a sense of fun and humor, this one-person shop has a lot to share about what has worked, what hasn’t, and the successes along the way as they prepare for their next campaign.

Session 5 (2:45pm-3:00pm): Apra-NY Closing Remarks and Appreciation!
